Where to start an energy efficiency review

Before discussing efficiency, understand the operating conditions behind current consumption. An initial review aims to establish a measurable picture of existing conditions.

01

Read consumption alongside operating patterns

Bills and meter records provide a starting point. Operating hours, production intensity and changes in equipment use also matter. Comparing the totals of two periods alone may not explain why they differ.

02

Use evidence to set priorities

Choose systems for review using consumption information and operational needs. An assessment should explain proposed improvements and the information needed for a decision. Different measures may involve different investment, implementation and operating conditions.

03

Discuss follow-up before implementation

When an improvement is considered, decide how its outcome will be followed. Discuss comparison periods, records and changing operating conditions. A saving should not be presented as a fixed percentage without reviewing site data.
